Kim was born and raised in Alberta. While working as a teacher and school counsellor in the public school system, she began developing her passion for helping others and decided to pursue graduate studies to further her skills in this area. She completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology in 2013 and became certified as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) soon after that. Kim loves to keep busy, and in her spare time enjoys cooking, reading, gardening, camping, and boating.
Areas of Practice
Kim is a general practice counsellor with a special interest in working with couples as well as with adults who are struggling with difficult families of origin. She also has a special interest in working with individuals who are struggling with addiction, or who are impacted by the effects of addiction, but welcomes clients who are going through challenging or dysfunctional situations of all sorts. In addition, she is experienced in helping adults manage the effects of depression, anxiety, stress, chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, brain injury, concussion, trauma, and life transitions.
Kim is a dedicated health care practitioner who believes that mental wellness interacts with physical health to produce overall wellbeing, and that counselling can help people feel better and cope more effectively with the challenges they’re experiencing. She also strongly believes in the benefits of stress reduction, and encourages her clients to consider lifestyle adjustments as a means of reducing feelings of unwellness. She operates from the perspective that every individual has the capacity to heal themselves and become healthier and happier along their journey, and she incorporates a narrative approach along with mindfulness and other types of therapy in her work.
When working with couples, Kim focuses on using the Gottman Method for relationship counselling. Through the use of scientifically proven techniques and exercises, the Gottman Method helps to break down the barriers that prevent couples from communicating and bonding effectively. With an emphasis on research-based interventions and exercises, it is a structured, goal-oriented, scientifically-based therapy that helps couples to build skills and improve the quality of their relationship. This method has proven to be highly effective in increasing intimacy, empathy, understanding, affection, and respect while producing lasting results within the relationship dynamics of both heterosexual and same-sex couples.
